ADDIS ABABA, July 27 – An all-time Ethiopian Olympian, Haile Gebrselassie takes aim for a political life as parliamentarian, a race many believe he will win.
Gebrselassie, holder of two gold medals and more than 27 world records that include 1,500 m and the marathon races intends to run for parliament in Ethiopia.
The next national parliamentary elections in Ethiopia take place in 2015.
Gerbreselassie is quoted by IPS as saying: “The country is in a different situation in terms of economic and political status when compared to the years before. Politics is not about fame and popularity, but about aiming to work for the development of the country. The main problem with our politics is that there are only a few who work towards achieving that goal.”
The Ethiopian track legend wanted to run for presidency instead.
